Why and How to use FSA or
HSA Funds for Coaching

Did you know that your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) can often cover the cost of personal training or health coaching—if your doctor recommends it for a medical condition?
Your FSA (Flexible Spending Account) or HSA (Health Savings Account) is money you’ve already set aside for health-related expenses.
These accounts are designed to help you pay for qualified medical services—using pre-tax dollars, which means you can save money while improving your health.
Depending on your plan, health coaching and fitness training may qualify as eligible expenses when they are recommended by a healthcare provider for specific health conditions.
Does fitness or health coaching qualify?
Your FSA or HSA can often be used to cover health or fitness coaching when it’s medically necessary for conditions such as:
Arthritis or joint pain
Diabetes or pre-diabetes
Heart disease or high blood pressure
Obesity or metabolic concerns
Post-surgery recovery
Chronic conditions (fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, etc.)
These programs help improve strength, mobility, and metabolic health—important parts of managing chronic conditions and reducing symptoms.

What is a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)?
To use your FSA/HSA for coaching or fitness programs, your provider may require a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN).
An LMN is a note from your doctor or healthcare provider that:

Recommends a health or fitness coaching program as part of your treatment plan
Explains how this program will support your medical care
💡 Tip: You can usually request this letter during your next doctor’s appointment. I’m happy to provide a sample template you can share with your provider to make the process easy.
